There are times when you can feel far from the Lord and unable to cope with the world’s pressures. Your Christian life may have turned to ashes and your witness is down the pan. Be assured “Jesus loves you” and rest in those arms, come to the place of forgiveness and blessing to be restored and then set out again with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Isaiah 40; 31 those who hope in the Lord renew their strength, they put out wings like eagles. They run and do not grow weary, walk and never tire.
Joshua 5; 13 to 6;2
When Joshua was near Jericho, he raised his eyes and saw a man standing there before him, grasping a naked sword. Joshua walked toward him and said to him, “Are you with us or with our enemies?” He answered, “No, I am captain of the army of the Lord , and now I come.” Joshua fell on his face to the ground and worshipped him and said, “What are my Lord’s commands to his servant?” The captain of the army of the Lord answered Joshua, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place you are standing on is holy.” And Joshua obeyed.
Now Jericho had been carefully barricaded against the Israelites; no one came out, no one went in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Now I am delivering Jericho and its King into your hands…”
Joshua must have had much on his mind with a battle pending and the Lord comes to him in human form and effectively says, “The Battle is mine not yours and the Victory is already won. I invite you to come alongside me.”
This should give us confidence and peace in all our situations. It means that the Lord is in charge and nothing happens by accident. Even in difficulty “All things tend to good for those who love God” Romans 8; 28
When I was considering the matter of forgiveness for those who have wronged you or yours, I was wondering if I would be able to forgive. When I hear Christians forgiving others who have often done terrible things I have had doubts that I would be able to forgive so readily. This little passage from Joshua sheds new light on this. Because the Lord is in charge and it is his battle not mine, I need to come alongside Him and offer the love of God which makes all the difference and furthers the Kingdom. After all the world needs this desperately, us to forgive in His name and offer His love. In response to all these awful things it would be a worse sin to withhold forgiveness. We want to break the cycle of sin not reinforce it. It was for freedom that Christ has set us free. Galatians 5;1
I’m saying this really for my own benefit as much as anything as it has given me a fresh view on forgiveness.
As an observation – Where is the sword in this passage?
Have a look at Revelation 1;12-19 Where is the sword here?
See Hebrews 4; 12 What is described as a sword?
So we should have the Bible in our hand and the word in our mouth, proclaiming out loud and witnessing into both the physical and the spiritual realm.
“The Battle does indeed belong to the Lord!”
From the passage in Joshua where God appears in human form, as far as I know God only has one human form and that is Jesus. So perhaps this is a pointer to another “Battle” and “Victory” won at the cross.
For reflection here is a little song from good old youtube.
